Sponsored by Joey’s Foundation, BFit launched its first full year at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital outpatient site with a mission to empower children with brain injuries through adaptive fitness, wellness education, and peer connection. The program integrates clinical expertise with community-building to support long-term health and independence.
BFit is a complimentary power-based exercise program designed specifically for children 5-21 years of age with a neuromuscular condition such as cerebral palsy. Current research shows that exercise directed at improving strength through power-training is likely to improve function in children with neuromuscular disorders. Benefits include:
- Increasing strength and power to allow children to reach their functional goals through exercise
- Socialization with a variety of children at different skill levels
- Learning to exercise in a fun way
During our recent peer support group sessions, we witnessed meaningful family engagement beyond the clinical setting. While the children participated in group activities, families gathered in the waiting area and organically began sharing their experiences, offering encouragement and exchanging contact information.
The program is led by three dedicated employees with backgrounds in physical therapy, occupational therapy, adaptive fitness, and program management. It is coordinated across departments to ensure seamless integration with rehab services and is supported by volunteers and peer mentors trained in inclusive practices. Students enrolled in healthcare related fields at area colleges and universities, such a Marymount University, serve as volunteer coaches.
